If the site is contaminated, the mix design study will also demonstrate the unique and specific Ecofill binder design required to either encapsulate or retard the leachability of the site contaminants to safe levels.
This ensures full environmental compliance is achieved for end use.
Ecofill can provide our “R-Ecofill” solution which is a complete remediation process for contaminated soils. This involves us processing the contaminated soils with the Ecofill proprietary binder.
The binder will remediate the contaminated soil through the process of solidification or stabilisation. Contaminants will therefore either be encapsulated, have their leachability reduced to safe levels or become chemically changed therefore reducing toxicity or mobility.
Ecofill can formulate bespoke proprietary binders to the contaminants present at the job site as determined in the remediation strategy. This helps ensure that the optimum remediation outcome is obtained on a site by site basis in terms of sustainability, performance and cost.
To comply with the relevant statutory requirements for remediation of contaminated land, Ecofill can provide the client with a full remediation package, which includes the following:
A document detailing the objectives, methodology and procedures of the proposed remediation works. The remediation works must remove the risks to human health and the environment either by physically removing the contaminated material or installing barriers to make the contamination inaccessible. The remediation must make the site suitable for use and remove future risk of any remaining contamination becoming mobile. Before any works commence, the remediation strategy must be submitted.
After the remediation strategy has been reviewed, samples are taken from site to an independent laboratory where mix design trials can begin. This will include the formulation of mix designs to what addition rate of binder(s) is required to successfully remediate the contaminated soil. The results of independent stabilisation trials are submitted to the regulatory authorities for statutory approval as part of the remediation strategy with the necessary notification to deploy under an appropriate environmental permit.
Legally required for projects over 1000 cubic meters.
This is carried out on-site whilst remediation with the required mix design is taking place. This is a requirement of the permit and the regulator.
Following completion of the works that were agreed in the remediation strategy, a validation report must be submitted to the Planning department and a Verification report submitted to CL:aire. These documents will demonstrate that the works have been carried out satisfactorily and remediation targets have been achieved. These will include documentary evidence for processes carried out during the remediation work to prove it meets the appropriate targets.
Our unique D-Ecofill process is widely available to decommission temporary structures such as haul roads & compounds once they have reached the end of their design life.
This regenerative solution transforms the Ecofill structures back to their original pH and nutrient status.
For example, this is particularly important in the case of a farmer’s field where the subsoil is required to be returned to its original condition to allow the future growth and harvest of crops.
Our Pre-Treatment (Pr-Ecofill) service is readily available to all projects where soil types and ground strata consistently offer overly high moisture content.
To achieve ultimate efficiency for the standard Ecofill process. Moisture levels from as dug ground or stockpiles need to be kept within pre-determined moisture levels.
Stockpiles will be tracked and sealed to prevent water ingress from inclement weather and will be tested for moisture content or MCV.
If stockpiles have a high moisture content (4%+ of OMC) then, if applicable, on dry and/or sunny days the stockpile can be opened-up and turned over to reduce moisture content.
In addition to air-drying high moisture content subsoil, our Pre-Treatment (Pr-Ecofill) service can be deployed whereby a non-corrosive drying agent can be mixed into the subsoil.
The drying-agent will react and decrease the moisture content of the soil.
It should be noted that once air-drying and/or the addition of drying agent has been carried out, stockpiles should be sealed again to prevent water ingress from future inclement weather.
